Carrier Bag Levy

Information and guidance regarding the Carrier Bag Levy in Northern Ireland.

Retailers in Northern Ireland must by law to charge a levy for all new carrier bags dispensed. Money from the levy is administered by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) and is used within Northern Ireland to fund environmental projects.

Climate Change

Climate Change is the issue of our time. DAERA and the Northern Ireland Executive are working in partnership with local councils, businesses and organisations to help tackle this issue. As part of our commitment to tackling climate change, we need to meet the Net Zero targets by 2050 as set out in the Climate Change Act NI 2022.

Water Watch - Report Now

At Loughs Agency, one of their key responsibilities is safeguarding the inland fisheries of Foyle and Carlingford through various measures. Their Fishery Officers patrol lakes, rivers, loughs, shorelines, and marine environments, keeping a watchful eye for any illegal fishing activity and pollution.

They conduct investigations and prosecute offenders under different legislation. The Agency has a strong track record in regulatory enforcement and has successfully partnered with enforcement agencies on both sides of the border.

As a member of the public, you also play a vital role in protecting the catchments by reporting incidents of illegal fishing and pollution. You can notify us through our reporting tool WaterWatch, or by calling our 24-hour response line: +44 (0) 2871 342100

Empowering Communities to Protect and Sustain Our Waterways

The Dennett Community Watershed Awareness/Protection Project, supported by the NIEA and delivered in collaboration with the Dennett Anglers Association, is an inspiring initiative that puts sustainability and community at its core. Through workshops, investigative walks, and hands-on learning, participants explore critical topics such as sediment run-off, land management practices, and local hydrology's impact on the Burndennett River and its tributaries.

Our recent workshop in the Cullion area, facilitated by FROGS CIC, provided an in-depth look at sedimentation issues and included an enlightening tour of the Cullion treatment plant. With the guidance of expert facilitators and a local former employee, participants delved into the workings of water treatment while engaging in meaningful conversations about protecting water quality and enhancing our watershed.

The project’s five key strands explore:

  • What is Water?

  • Who Lives Here?

  • Who and What Threatens Water Quality?

  • What Changes Can I Make?

  • Designing a Water Quality Protection website.

This participant-driven water quality protection website empowers the community to take practical steps towards preserving our local aquatic ecosystems for future generations. By fostering water awareness and providing up-to-date information about events and helpful resources, it serves as a vital hub for communities keen to safeguard our waterways and stay actively involved in sustainability efforts.

Interested in joining us? Sign up for upcoming workshops by emailing dennettvalleyhealthnetwork@gmail.com or dennettanglers@gmail.com. Together, we can create a healthier, more sustainable watershed.
